Abstract
In this study the mechanism of thyroid hormone reductions reported in rodents, following exposure to TCDD (Potter et al, 1983), PCBs (Grassle and Biesmann 1982; Brouwer 1987) and polybrominated biphenyls (Gupta et al 1983), was investigated in rats at the level of the transport protein, transthyretin (TTR), using 3,4,3’,4’-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TCB) as a model compound. Moreover, the effects of a commercial mixture of PCBs, Aroclor 1254, on plasma thyroid hormone concentrations was investigated in rats, in order to predict whether similar alterations would possibly occur in wildlife species, following environmental exposure to PCBs.
