The Origin of CSF Pulse Waves

Abstract

Many researchers have looked at the CSF pulse wave and its response to conditions in the cranial vault (Guinane 1975, Avezaat et al. 1979). However, despite these studies the origin of the pulse wave is still unclear (Adolph et al. 1966). Two theories of where the CSF pulse wave originates are 1) it is generated in the choroid plexus and 2) it is a result of cerebral vascular pulsations. In this study the origin of the CSF pulse wave was investigated as well as its response to increases in intracranial pressure.
