Effect of Mannitol on Experimental Infusion Edema

  • Conference paper
Intracranial Pressure VII

Abstract

The effect of mannitol in reducing brain water has been under considerable scrutiny since the work of Takagi et al. (1983) who reported that mannitol reduced ICP but did not reduce tissue water measured gravimetrically. These results directly contradicted earlier findings by other workers. Further controversy arose with the reports by Muizelaar et al. (1983) which showed that the pressure reducing properties of mannitol act primarily through a vasoconstrictive effect and not by water reduction. This study was designed to document the acute and chronic effects of mannitol in reducing ICP, measuring tissue water by MRI and specific gravity methods.
