Magmatism in Extensional Structural Settings

Abstract

Most of the African continent has been a stable craton area since the end of the Pan-African tectono-thermal event (ca. 600–500 Ma ago). The Phanerozoic evolution of this plate has been characterized by diachronous uplift and/or rifting (Fig. 1) and magmatism (Fig. 2) since the Cambrian, and accompanying fragmentation of Gondwanaland from Carboniferous times to the Present.
