Abstract
Explanations of panic disorder (PD) refer to underlying pathogenic processes that are assumed to be specific to PDs. There are various ways to test the validity of such theories on the dynamics of panic. Particularly important, if not decisive, are tests aimed at triggering and neutralizing the hypothetical underlying process. Triggering the pathogenic mechanism should arouse panic, preferably only in PD, while neutralizing the process should reduce pathology.
