Cell to Cell Signals in Plant, Animal and Microbial Symbiosis

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIH,volume 17))

Abstract

Among invertebrates, insects offer good models of permanent heterospecific associations (=symbiosis). Three main types can be defined: ectosymbiosis (insects which cultivate fungi), endosymbiosis (gut symbiosis in Termites and some Scarabeid or Cerambycid beetles) and endocytobiosis, i.e. intracellular symbiosis. This last type has the highest degree of integration with the host, and is the only one which will be considered in this article.
