A Steroid-Eluting, Low-Threshold, Low-Polarizing Electrode

  • Conference paper
Cardiac Pacing

Summary

A porous steroid-eluting electrode gives stable, low chronic thresholds without peaking in animal studies. Controlled steroid release at the tissue-electrode interface affects only a few myocardial cells, precluding systemic side effects. Human studies so far confirm the animal results. This will allow the use of much lower pulse generator voltage and pulse width without compromising safety. When combined with appropriate pacing circuits, the new electrode’s low polarization characteristics may allow reliable capture detection.
