Abstract
Lattice dynamics and electronic properties of superlattices present striking similarities. We show, on the basis of one-dimensional models, that optical vibrations can be confined in “phonon quantum wells” and that the superperiodicity induces a folding of the acoustical modes. Raman scattering experiments are presented and discussed in the light of these simple models.
