Part of the book series: Proceedings in Life Sciences ((LIFE SCIENCES))

Abstract

Enzymes which hydrolyze extracellularly applied nucleoside triphosphates have been described at the surface of a variety of cell types. These include mammary gland tumor cells (Carraway et al. 1980), blood platelets (Chambers et al. 1967), polymorphonuclear leucocytes (De Pierre and Karnovsky 1974), granulocytes (Smolen and Weissmann 1978), lymphoid cells (see Dornand, Gutensohn, this volume), Ehrlich ascites tumor cells (Ronquist and Ågren 1975), spermatozoa (Majumder 1981), isolated pancreas cells (Hamlyn and Senior 1983), vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells in culture (see Pearson, Slakey, this volume) as well as glial and neuroblastoma cells in culture (Stefanovic et al. 1976). More recently ectonucleotidase activity has also been described in fractions of intact nerve endings (synaptosomes) isolated from either mammalian (Sorensen and Mahler 1982) or chicken brain (Nagy et al. 1983, see Nagy, this volume) or from the electric organ of the electric ray Torpedo marmorata (Keller and Zimmermann 1983).
