Abstract
The processes affecting distribution of trace metal species in lakes can be divided in two categories:

1)
Species transformation at system boundaries: river-lake, atmospherelake, and sediment-water.
-
2)
Biochemical processes of assimilation and respiration in the system which can transform species and alter transport processes by increasing or decreasing proton activity, by producing ligands, and by increasing or decreasing electron activity. Descriptive data are only available for lakes in temperate climates
