Summary

The functions of draining vessels under normal and pathological conditions are discussed. When there is mechanical insufficiency of the lymphatic system, a lymphoedema develops. According to the rules of pathology, the lymphoedema not only develops by swelling; there are also tissue alterations such as fibrosis or sclerosis.

For practical reasons, obstructions of the lymphatic and venous discharge have to be distinguished.
