The Physiological Properties of Plant Protoplasts

Part of the book series: Proceedings in Life Sciences ((LIFE SCIENCES))

Abstract

The application of protoplasts as a tool for the study of photosynthesis was first done with C4 plants in examining the intercellular and intracellular compartmentation of photosynthetic enzymes (Kanai and Edwards 1973; Gutierrez et al. 1975). Over the last decade, protoplasts have been isolated from C3, C4 and CAM plants to study various aspects of photosynthetic metabolism (Edwards and Walker 1983; Kobza and Edwards 1984). In the present review we discuss ways in which protoplasts have been used in the study of photorespiration, and the potential of this method for future research on this topic.
