Part of the book series: Health Systems Research ((HEALTH))

Abstract

Every 7th resident of the F.R.G. population was 65 years or older in 1981 (Statistisches Bundesamt 1983). In 1970 every 8th resident fell into that age group (Statistisches Bundesamt 1982). Consequently the elderly constitute a major group of consumers of ambulatory medical care. The EVaS-Study, a national representative sample survey of contacts with office-based physicians (Schach S et al in this volume) enables us to describe contents of care in ambulatory medical practice of office-based physicians. The survey was carried out in 1981/82 (Kerek-Bodden et al in this volume). Basic unit of observation was the patient contact. 62% (551) of the sample physicians responded and documented 13 571 patient contacts in total.
