Arrhythmias in Patients with Congestive and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy During Holter Monitoring and Interventions

Abstract

Patients (pts) with congestive cardiomyopathy (CCM) are at high risk through progressive heart failure, thromboembolism, and rhythm disturbances. Annual mortality is about 3% in pts with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM); 25% of the pts with CCM suffer cardiac death [7], primarily due to ventricular tachycardias [3, 9,10], The occurrence of atrial fibrillation worsens the prognosis. The aim of this study is first to identify the incidence of arrhythmias in pts with primary interventions which stimulate the sympathetic nervous system on frequency and grade of ventricular extrasystolic beats (VEBs), as 50% of the sudden deaths in pts with HOCM occur during moderate to hard exercise [9]. The importance of such interventions in provocation of arrhythmias has been described for pts with long-QT syndrome [12, 14] and other heart diseases [1].
