The Pathophysiology of Fever in the Neonate

Pyretics and Antipyretics

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 60))

Abstract

The development of a raised body temperature as a frequent accompaniment to many diseases has been known for a long time. The generally accepted view is that fever is a rise in deep-body temperature resulting from a change in its central control, which change can most conveniently be described as an upward re-setting of the so-called thermostat in the hypothalamus. This set-point elevation is thought to result from the action of some exogenous pyrogens, which release endogenous pyrogen from various cellular elements of the body. This in turn acts on structures of the central nervous system (CNS) responsible for the control of body temperature. It has been repeatedly shown that during fever body temperature is still regulated but at a higher level than normal, and various responses of the thermoregulatory effector mechanisms to thermal stimuli can still be observed in this state. In a recent volume of this series two reviews discussed several problems of fever genesis and antipyresis (Feldberg and Milton 1979; Rosendorff and Woolf 1979).
