Abstract
In spinal surgery, an external skeletal fixation technique has been in use for four years, primarily for instabilities in the thoracolumbar and lumbar spine caused by fractures and infections. According to clinical experience it is an advantageous alternative to various internal fixation systems (Magerl, 1979; 1981). Adequate stability has been achieved and no failure of skeletal anchorage encountered. The area of fixation is limited to the vertebrae adjacent to the spinal lesion. It is applicable in the presence of infections.
