Abstract

Considering hominid evolution (and espeeially Plio-Pleistocene hominids), it is striking that the forelimb, and espeeially the humerus, has been studied only by isolated authors (Broom et al. 1950, Day 1976,1978, Day et al. 1976, McHenry 1973, McHenry and Corruccini 1975, Oxnard 1973,1975, Robinson 1972, Straus 1948). The skulls and teeth were probably considered as more interesting, and usually used in reeonstruetions of human phylogeny. However, reeent discoveries realized in East Afriea (East Turkana in Kenya, Hadar in Ethiopia) have provided a large sample of distal humeri which permit the differentiation of three main groups among Plio-Pleistocene hominids (Senut 1978).
