Part of the book series: Progress In Molecular and Subcellular Biology ((PMSB,volume 7))

Abstract

The green death cup Amanita phalloides is one of the most toxic plants found in Europe and Northern America and the deleterious activities of extracts of this toadstool have been studied for more than a century. However, investigation of the biological activities became possible only 20 years ago when Th. Wieland and collaborators had isolated in crystalline form the various toxins present in the extract. Two groups of low molecular weight toxins have since been characterized, the phallotoxins and the amatoxins (for reviews see Wieland and Wieland 1959; Wieland 1968; Wieland and Wieland 1972; Wieland and Faulstich 1978).
