Abstract
Flavin-mediated photoreactions are found in many biological systems. Some of these photoreactions can be simulated in artificial systems comprised of flavin light and a suitable electron donor and acceptor. Such artificial systems have been reported earlier (Schmidt and Butler 1976) showing that excited flavins are able to photoreduce cytochrome c under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Semi-biological or semi-artificial systems consisting of biological membrane fractions suspended in a flavin solution have also been reported (Ninnemann et al. 1976). In these experiments the redox changes of membrane-bound cytochromes could be mediated by the excited exogeneous flavins.
