The Effect of Diffusion Potentials on Facilitated CO2 Diffusion

Part of the book series: Proceedings in Life Sciences ((LIFE SCIENCES))

Abstract

Bicarbonate-facilitated CO2 transport is, as described elsewhere in this section, of long-standing biological and industrial interest. It can be said to date back at least half a century to A.V. Hill’s (1928) comment on August Krogh’s (1918–1919) measurements of tissue O2 and CO2 permeabilities: “It seems rather curious that the larger molecule should diffuse faster.”
