Abstract
Shapiro et al (I) in 1974 recorded that intravenous barbiturates were effective in lowering intracranial pressure (ICP). Since then little evidence has accrued as to which barbiturate is most effective, which disease processes respond to this therapy and what the end points of therapy should be. Further, there is little information as to the relative complications of this therapy. We have had the opportunity to monitor the ICP in 180 children between 1975 and 1979. Of this group, 61 patients have received barbiturates in large doses as an ancillary measure to control elevated ICP. This report concerns our observations in this group of children.
