Abstract

It is now generally accepted that the Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) may be interpreted as a variant of the photosynthetic CO2 fixation. CAM is performed mainly but not exclusively by succulents of the Crassulacean family (Black and Williams, 1976; Szarek and Ting, 1977; Kluge and Ting, 1978). There is increasing evidence that CAM is of significance as an adaptational mechanism facilitating photosynthesis in arid environments (cf. Kluge, 1976; Kluge and Ting, 1978).
