Degradation of Purine Nucleotides

  • Chapter
Uric Acid

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 51))

Abstract

Purine nucleotides have a vital role in metabolism. Therefore, the maintenance of a constant nucleotide composition of the cell is essential for normal function. Purine nucleotides are synthesized by purine biosynthesis de novo, by salvage pathways and nucleoside kinases, and by degradation of nucleic acids. The use of nucleotides occurs in nucleic acid synthesis, in various reactions of intermediary metabolism and in the degradation to the inert product uric acid. Regulated activity of these many pathways by synthesizing and degrading nucleotides appears to be critical.
