Abstract

Urinary tract stones were known in prehistoric times. The oldest stone was unearthed in upper Egypt, dated approximately 4800 B.C. (Shattock, 1905). Stones have been discovered from Egyptian mummies of different dynasties (Miller, 1929; Wesson, 1935; Guthrie, 1946; Sigerist, 1951; Butt, 1956). Williams recorded one from North Arizona, estimated to be 3000 years old (Williams, 1926). Stone disease has been described from China and India (Thomson, 1921; McCarrison, 1931). Lithotomy was mentioned in ancient India in the first century B.C. (Guthrie, 1946). Stones were then almost exclusively found in the bladder, kidney stones being rare. For some unknown reason, the prevalence of bladder stones has decreased steadily from western countries since the turn of the century (Sallinen, 1959).
