Development and Clinical Importance of the Dysplastic Acetabulum

Abstract

During the first three embryonic months, i.e., during the period of organogenesis, all the structural components of the acetabulum are formed, and the way is thus prepared for further fetal development. The clinical importance of fetal development of the hip lies in the fact that these structural components are formed while the femur is flexed, whereas Homo erectus will use his hip joint in extension. The child is unable to do this during the first year of life. His first attempts at crawling are made at 3–4 months of age, using all four extremities. The first walking attempts, beginning at the end of the first year, are carried out with a distinct flexion of the hip and knee joints.
