Chemical Vapor Deposition of Boron Filament

  • Chapter
Boron and Refractory Borides

Abstract

During the decade, 1960–1970, boron filament progressed from its position of a $5000 per pound laboratory curiosity to its present status of a production level reinforcement fiber exhibiting superior properties for advanced composite applications. Boron filament is currently manufactured in quantities of about 30,000 lbs/year for primary use in military aircraft structures. Boron composites are being used extensively on the U.S. military aircraft, F-14 and F-15, and are being studied as a potential reinforcement material for commercial aircraft such as the DC-10, Boeing 737, and European A300 Airbus. From 1974 on, several thousand pounds of boron composites will be used on the Space Shuttle Orbiter structure, and, finally, boron composites are finding increasing application in stiffening golf shafts, tennis rackets, and bicycle frames.
