Abstract
Before the development of C.A.T., the only reliable way of demonstrating atrophic changes in the brain during life was by pneumoencephalography. From the early days of the use of this procedure, measurements have been made of the size of the ventricles (4), although there has been considerable discussion as to their validity (2). Even more difficulty has been encountered in the establishment of normal values for the size of the cerebral sulci, particularly in their relationship to clinical evidence of dementia (1, 3, 9, 11, 13); such correlation has been disappointing. One of the disadvantages has been the difficulty in filling the sulci in some patients without other evidence of convexity block, although some workers have suggested that this may re-present a pathological rather than a technical feature (10).
