General Remarks on Travel Time Data and Principles of Correlation

  • Conference paper
Explosion Seismology in Central Europe

Abstract

Beginning with the velocity gradient, the various types of velocity models will be discussed. The cases of constant velocity and first-order discontinuity must be regarded as extreme cases. Low-velocity layers as well as too-short observation lines cause an incompleteness of travel-time data, preventing a unique solution of the problem to determine the velocity distribution v (x,y,z).

In the second part, the term correlation will be treated, with its meaning which must be differentiated in reflection and refraction seismics. Finally the importance of phase and group correlation will be outlined.
