Characterization of Experimental Type II Hyperlipoproteinaemia in Guinea Pigs

  • Conference paper
Atherosclerosis III

Abstract

When guinea pigs are fed for six days on a diet containing 15% corn oil and 1.6% cholesterol by weight, they generate a high level of a low density lipoprotein (LR-LDL) which is unusually rich in cholesterol and its ester, but is deficient in triglyceride and protein (Mills et al., 1972). This report is concerned with the changes in lipoprotein metabolism which lead to the production of these abnormal compounds, which are particularly interesting in view of their analogy with the anomalous LDL of human familial hyperbetalipoproteinaemia (Slack and Mills, 1970).
