Does the Stoichiometry of Coupling Necessarily Reveal the Composition of the Ternary Complex?

  • Chapter
Na-linked Transport of Organic Solutes

Abstract

The second subject on which I have been asked to make a summary comment is the stoichiometry of the flux of an alkali-metal ion, on the one hand, and of an organic metabolite, on the other. Most of the results I will present depart from those reported for System A of the Ehrlich cell, and also from those just discussed by Dr. Curran. These departures do not, however, bring the alkali-metal ion-gradient hypothesis into question. Instead they show us that we must not always expect energy transfer to accompany linkage of fluxes, and also warn us that we must take precautions that we are examining a homogeneous transport process.
