Abstract

Production of timber is the most pressing task for many countries. In the last 10 years, because of the increased demands on timber and fiber production, more attention has been focused on intensive silvicultural practices. Poplars fit into intensive silvicultural systems, because of their rapid growth, ease of propagation, and high utility for a variety of wood fiber products (Schreiner 1959; Cram 1960; Larson and Gordon 1969; Dawson and Hutchinson 1973). In countries where natural forestry resources are limited, Populus species are being planted for timber (Kangle Bureau of Forestry 1976), pulp, paper, and for ecological needs of reforestation.
