Long-Term Changes in Site Index in Growth and Yield Experiments with Norway Spruce (Picea abies, [L.] Karst) and Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris, L.) in Sweden

Growth Trends in European Forests

Abstract

Based on records from long-term yield experiments in pure Scots pine and Norway spruce stands in Sweden, the development of top height was analysed. The top height of a sample plot is defined as the average height of the largest 100 trees (in terms of diameter) per hectare. Site indices, i.e. top height in 100-year-old stands, were estimated using site-index functions commonly applied in Sweden on two different occasions for each sample plot. The observation periods varied between 27 and 39 years in one study group and between 15 and 26 years in a second group.

In most regions, the site indices have increased significantly in both Scots pine and Norway spruce stands during the last decades. The increase of site index has been highest in southwestern Sweden where the atmospheric deposition of nitrogenous compounds is high, i.e. 15-30kg N ha-1y-1.
