Effect of Orbital Asymmetry in P•+ on Electron Transfer in Reaction Centers of Rb. sphaeroides

  • Conference paper
The Reaction Center of Photosynthetic Bacteria

Abstract

The cation radical of the primary donor, P•+, has been investigated in a set of mutants of Rb. sphaeroides with different hydrogen bonds to the special pair, using EPR/ENDOR spectroscopy. The results show that these mutants exhibit large variations in the distribution of the unpaired electron between the dimer halves of P dependent on the hydrogen bond situation. The comparison with the electron transfer rate from cytochrom c2 to P•+ reveals a correlation of this rate with the fraction of the unpaired electron on the L-half of the dimer. The implications of this finding for the electron pathway of this reaction are discussed.
