Abstract
These are exciting times in the antibiotic field. New dimensions in drug discovery are arising from new research technologies, while the problem of drug resistance is growing and therefore, more widely recognized and discussed. The dialogue about drug resistance is no longer confined to the clinician, the seriously ill patient, or the drug company. One only need look at the popular press — newspapers, magazines, and even the tabloids — to understand the extent of public interest and concern about the drug resistance problem.
