Zusammenfassung
Gegen Ende des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts sieht sich die Menschheit mit Umweltzuständen und -entwicklungen konfrontiert, welche Anlaß zur Sorge hinsichtlich langfristiger Nutzungsmöglichkeiten des Planeten Erde bereiten. Naturwissenschaftliche Analysen belegen, daß die kritischen Veränderungen mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit anteilig anthropogen sind (Hasselmann et al. , 1995). Ihre Effekte und Merkmale sind: • zunehmend häufige und folgenreiche Umweltkatastrophen (Münchener Rück, 1997), • mittel- und langfristige Veränderungen globalen Maßstabes, wie etwa veränderte Niederschlagsmuster oder die Ausdünnung des Stratosphärenozons, • zunehmende Konzentration von Treibhausgasen in der Atmosphäre sowie • weltweit rapider Ressourcenabbau - vorwiegend zur Energiegewinnung.
