Co-Evolution of Legume—Rhizobial Symbioses: Is It Essential for Either Partner?

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIG,volume 39))

Abstract

In the last few years much new information has been published, principally using molecular methods, on the taxonomy and phylogeny of both legumes and their nodulating bacteria. Much of this new information comes from tropical areas, where the biodiversity of both legumes and rhizobia is greater than in more temperate areas. With respect to co-evolution, things now seem much more complicated than before.
