Abstract
Lupins belonging to tribe Genisteae constitute one of the most ancient collections of legumes. This monophylogenetic genus comprises of a dynamic group of species that occupy all kinds of habitats (Kass and Wink 1994). The exact number of species is unknown; roughly 500 species have been described. The real number, however, could be as high as 1700 species (Planchuelo 1994). Owing to their flexibility to adapt to adverse environmental challenges, high protein and oil content in seeds, as well as production of various alkaloids, lupins are a most useful legumes in agriculture, biotechnology and ecology.
