Abstract
An integrated view on the morphodynamics and biodynamics of a tidal backbarrier lagoon is presented, together with some implications for coastal zone management in the Wadden Sea. The present size and shape of the List tidal basin is primarily determined by the local position of glacial deposits, the history of hydrodynamic forces, and finally the embankments along the mainland coast and two causeways to the islands. In this century, the areal share of the intertidal zone decreased from roughly two to one third of the basin. In addition, the accumulation of fine-grained deposits is very low by comparison. It is assumed that this state is mainly a consequence of progressive embankments and of the two causeways, causing the input of hydrodynamic energy to increase per unit area. Biological exchange processes are considered at three scales. At a microscale within the sediment, there is a tight coupling of high production and remineralisation with little export, performed by a highly diverse and stable assemblage of small organisms. At a macroscale between the sediment and the tidal waters, coupling between populations is lax, rates of import and export vary with the activity of a few dominant organisms and with hydrodynamic forces. At a megascale over large horizontal distances, i.e. between the Wadden Sea and the North Sea, variability and unpredictability increase further, and in the long-term, medians of import and export rates are not significantly different. The List tidal basin fluctuates between sink and source relative to the North Sea. With regard to effects of increasing coastal eutrophication, the List tidal basin shows a time lag of approximately 15 years compared to southern parts of the Wadden Sea with more direct riverine inflows. Furthermore, erosion and enhanced hydrodynamic forces counteract bioaccumulation in this lagoon cramped by dikes and causeways. In the long-run, these physical processes will diminish the biota of the intertidal zone, and the saltmarsh transition to the land in particular. These losses may be mitigated by disempoldering part of the former Vidå estuary.
