Physics of Clusters and Cluster Assemblies

  • Chapter
Theory of Atomic and Molecular Clusters

Part of the book series: Springer Series in Cluster Physics ((CLUSTER))

Abstract

Atomic clusters with a specific size and composition can be viewed as “super-atoms” whose chemistry mimics that of the atoms in the periodic table. A novel class of materials with tailored properties can then be synthesized by assembling these clusters in a variety of ways. This review deals with the physics and chemistry of unusually stable clusters and electronic structure and energetics of crystals where these clusters form the building blocks. Also discussed are the electronic structure and magnetic properties of clusters supported on metallic substrates.
