Abstract

Carbon dioxide is absorbed by vegetation through the photosynthetic process and is released to the atmosphere through respiration of living organisms and decomposition of organic matter. It is also one of the major waste products resulting from the combustion of various fuels. For thousands of years the CO2 concentration was thought to have been relatively constant. However, since 1860 the amount of CO2 in the earth’s atmosphere has increased from approximately 270 ppm to approximately 340 ppm (Bach 1978), with a present annual rate of increase of about 1.5 ppm (Beardsmore and Pearman 1987). The increasing level of carbon dioxide and other biogenic trace gases in the atmosphere has led to many scientific speculations on their long-term effects, such as changes in global temperature and precipitation.
