Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 145))

Abstract

This topic will be treated on two levels: the level of populations and the level of communities. Within their areas of distribution, species’ population densities generally are determined by immigration, emigration, age-specific mortality rates and age-specific fertility. There is certainly migration of glochidia carrying fish, which will depend on the fish species and the duration of the parasitic stage. However, apart from catastrophic events like spates washing adults downstream (see Sect. 9.2.1.4), there are still no data available about the extent to which migration processes influence population dynamics among naiads.
