Perinatal Approach to Anomalies of the Urinary Tract, Adrenals and Genital System

Perinatal Imaging

Part of the book series: Medical Radiology ((Med Radiol Diagn Imaging))

Abstract

In many countries, obstetrical ultrasound (US) is performed routinely during normal pregnancies. In Belgium, three sonographic examinations are performed, one in each trimester. In other countries, only a second mid-trimester examination is performed routinely, first or third trimester examinations being performed only when there is a specific indication. The more systematic use of obstetrical US has led to the discovery of many fetal anomalies, among which the uro-nephropathies represent one of the largest group of congenital anomalies encountered and managed at birth. Furthermore, dramatic changes have occurred in their management since nowadays uropathies are confirmed in mostly asymptomatic patients and the treatment applied is mainly preventive. Also, the antenatal detection and postnatal follow-up have brought new data on the natural history of many pathologies (Thomas 1990, Scott and Renwick 1999, Livera et al. 1989, Zhou et al. 1999).
