Insomnia: Epidemiology, Subtypes, and Relationship to Psychiatric Disorders

Sleep Disorders in Psychiatric Patients

Abstract

Dissatisfaction with sleep quantity or quality is a common complaint in the general population, and these symptoms considerably influence the expression, consequence, and outcome of distress in patients with psychiatric disorders. The prevalence of insomnia decreases as stringent definitions that emphasize the frequency and duration of the complaint, associated daytime impairments, or the fulfillment of specific criteria for disorders are applied. Subtypes of insomnia are facilitating our understanding of the complex interactions between sleep and psychiatric disorders that may lead ultimately to improved outcomes for patients suffering from these disorders.
