Uveal Metastatic Tumors

Clinical Ophthalmic Oncology

Abstract

Metastatic tumors to the uvea were thought to be among the most frequent intraocular tumors, despite the absence of a lymphatic system. This information was based on autopsy studies of the 1970s and 1980s. Recent reports have shown a much lower incidence reflecting the recent advances in cancer treatment. Sight-threatening uveal metastasis, however, may still occur in patients with advanced cancer, and the ophthalmologist may be the first physician to detect disseminating disease as uveal metastasis may be the first presenting symptom, particularly with breast cancer and adenocarcinoma of the lung.
