Abstract
We report the results of a new experimental technique for measuring the spin-orbit contribution to x-ray absorption, called magnetic absorption in this paper Magnetic absorption is the x-ray version of the magneto-optic Kerr effect, used here on the ferrimagnet alloy Gd18Fe82. The size of magnetic absorption is proportional to the final spin density of states [1]. We have measured the magnetic absorption coefficient μm at the Gd L3 edge (2p3 2 → 5d transition) for the alloy to quantify the extent of spin polarization of the Gd(5d) states. We find that its size relative to the normal x-ray absorption coefficient μn is: μm/μn ≤ 0.002.
