Abstract

The preference functions for seven Dutch political parties as established by Merkies and Nijman (1980) were not robust. In this paper we will show how more robustness can be obtained by using quadratic preference functions together with the optimal values of the variables, provided by the parties themselves. The crucial technique is that of mixed regression, see Theil — Goldberger (1961).
