Abstract

Problems involving the interaction of radiation with matter occur in a wide variety of fields including among others astrophysics, atmospheric electricity, and the ionospheric layers at high altitudes. In addition laboratory studies on the conduction of electricity through gases frequently must concern themselves with the participation of photons in certain events. In each case the individual problems differ widely, and of all processes by which radiation may exchange energy with matter, this article will be limited to a discussion of the present state of our knowledge on A). the photoionization in gases and B). the phenomena of the external photoelectric effect.
