Abstract
Many intoxications have long been supposed to be related to the ingestion of toxic crustaceans, and a number of papers on this subject have been published and reviewed by HALSTEAD (1965), GUINOT (1967), and HOLTHUIS (1968). These authors list more than 20 species that are suspected to be toxic. Among these crustaceans, however, the sand crab, Emerita analoga, is the only species whose toxin has been to some extent experimentally examined (SOMMER, 1932; SOMMER and MEYER, 1937). In this chapter only the reports based on experimental data will be reviewed; the older literature above will not be discussed, in order to avoid overlapping.
