Childhood Obesity: The Impact of Maternal Obesity on Childhood Obesity

Maternal Obesity and Pregnancy

Abstract

The prevalence of obesity among children is rising such that one in five school-aged children in the UK are now obese. Intra-uterine life is now recognised as a key period for development of childhood obesity, and maternal obesity is one of the strongest risk factors for development of childhood obesity. Maternal obesity has been linked to both increased birthweight and increased adiposity as a neonate, in childhood and adolescence. This can potentially lead to an intergenerational cycle of obesity. Increased gestational weight gain is also a risk factor for childhood obesity and the Institute of Medicine has recently revised gestational weight gain guidelines with advice for obese women to limit weight gain. Mechanisms linking maternal obesity to childhood obesity are unknown, but there has been recent interest in the role of epigenetics. This evolving field could offer potential for early detection of particularly vulnerable individuals. In addition, results of trials to modify maternal weight or gestational weight gain in obese mothers are awaited.
