Abstract

Cervical cancer is the seventh most common malignancy among women in Western Europe comprising 3.5% of all new cancer cases and about 3% of all tumor-related deaths. Incidence rates vary worldwide between 3/100,000 women (Syria) and 94/100,000 women (Haiti) [1]. Germany has an incidence of 12/100,000 women. The number of new cases of cervical cancer decreased continuously from 9,200 to 6,400 between the years 1980 and 2002 [2] (Fig. 36.1). During the same period of time, deaths also decreased in Germany from 2,200 to 1,800. Worldwide, cervical cancer causes approximately 500,000 new cases and about 35,000 deaths each year, particularly in third world countries.
